I'm 25 years old and about to start orthodontic treatment...was told that at some point during the treatment, I need a frenectomy done...what is the procedure like...how long is the recovery time...is it harder for them to do it once braces are on?
Orthodontics/Frenectomy?
Most often a frenectomy would be done before any ortho treatment. The frenum that is located between the two front teeth on the upper maxillary arch. It is a small muscle that starts where the upper lip attaches to the gingiva (gum tissue) and runs down between the two front teeth, and ends on the palate right behind the teeth. The tissue (muscle) is slightly raised, bulbous in appearance. Some of us have more pronounced(bigger)frenums, that causes there to be a space(gap) between our front teeth. For which it is recommended to have removed. Now if you were to have braces placed without the frenectomy done, it wouldn't take long for those front teeth to move apart, creating the original gap that you started with.
With any type of gum surgery the older you are the longer the recovery. However the mouth heals rather quickly, as long as all oral hygiene instructions are performed by you on a regular, consistent basis. You will probably have a few small stitches done. I don't know if they would use the dissolving type, or if you would have to have them removed. Which, in my personal experience, hurt the most out of all the work that I had gone through.Go figure.
You will do just fine. It will be well worth it in the long run.
Good Luck

Reply:The frenula is that thin strip of tissue that attaches from your upper lip to the gum between your front teeth. The procedure to release it is simple... it's a no-stitch office surgery. Nuttin' to it. The recovery is almost immediate and it's a relatively pain-free experience.
As to when is the best time to have it done... that's up to the doctor who is managing your case. If he needs the extra room between lip and teeth, he'll suggest it right from the get-go.
Good luck - bright smiles.
