Why do the orthodontics tell us not to eat ice if we have braces?

no one (braces or not) should chew ice. Braces it will possibly loosen or break a bracket. Those without, it wears the enamel down and is bad for you period.

you might bite down and break a bracket. thats it
Reply:ok well you should never bite ice. this results in chipping your teeth or the breaking of the actualll bracket. So do not chew ice. Also sucking on things such as ice cause spaces in the teeth.
Reply:For the possiblity of breaking a part of the brace, each time it breaks it extends the length of time the treatment needed.
Reply:It's not just ice that the orthodontist is warning you about, it is all hard foods and hard objects (like biting into pencils, etc). You can break off a bracket or bend your arch wire if you bite into very hard foods, including ice. Besides, your teeth will probably be sore and the last thing you'd feel like doing is chewing on hard ice chips!
