Bending the archwire in orthodontics?

I had an adjustment yesterday and my orthodontist removed the wire that I had, bent it in some spots, and put it back in. It's bent "up and down" so if you look at it straight on, it looks like a step from one brace to another. What does bending the wire do to the teeth? Move it up or down? Keep in mind that my teeth are already linear and that they wire fit wasily without needing to be bent, but my ortho bent it anyways. This is first time I've had this done in since I got my braces over a year ago.

Thanks a lot! =]

Bending the archwire in orthodontics?
The small bends he is using now are correcting small little nuances of you bite/smile that will make it that much nicer. If you have been in braces for a year sometimes they reach a point where the wire is at it's max, now comes the closing spaces, looking at the occlusion, lining up the edges of the teeth, and using possible rubber-bands to make all the teeth fix just right.

It may not seem like the Orthodontist did anything to help, but he did.

Hang in there!
