TMJ... orthodontics?

ok,,, i have already established i have tmj and my jaw is clearly wayyyyyy not right... but how do i fix it,,,

plate, braces etc??

i would like to know =]

TMJ... orthodontics?
I would seek out a dentist or orthodontist who specializes in treating TMJ. If you know there is a problem, the real dilemma is will the problem get worse over time or not. TMJ can often lead to a degeneration of the joint, and that is not fun when the disk between your skull and mandible gets ground down to nothing, then you could have severe pain, your jaw could lock open or closed or you might have very limited movement of the jaw. Knowing exactly what is the problem is the best place to start. That could even mean some X-rays of your joint in action.

Properly constructed splints are often a very good start when treating TMJ (and this is not the bulky kind you buy at the store). They can be made in such a way as to relax your joint.

Again you need to see a specialist to know the best way to treat your TMJ.
Reply:I dont know... mine is horrible too, it clicks so loud that everyone in a room can hear it. I have been to doctors and they suggested mouthguards which are expensive and I dont think work. My orthopedic says dont eat bagels or chew gum ever again, and just live it out. I say, this sucks.... I dont know what to do either
Reply:My wife got braces and it helped her tremendously. I would recommend that you talk to a dentist.
Reply:mine is just like kates...i got a splint wich is lyk the night guards that can be bought at walgreens or cvs it keeps me from clenching when angry or stressed it help a little i guess apprently i clench my teeth in sleep making the tmj worse so try that aswell ask your dentist about it...tmj sucks i wish the clicking could be cured and braces deff didnt help i had them for 9 years it actally messed up my jaw
Reply:Have you seen your dentist yet? I work for one that really has helped a lot of people with TMJ. First, a simple adjustment might be needed. A dentist can check your bite to see if you're biting on one tooth first rather than all at once. A little shaving down of one or more teeth may be all that is needed. One thing that has helped me not to clench anymore is this little trick.....Say Mississippi. See where your teeth are right after you say it? A few millimeters apart. Keep your teeth a few millimeters apart, your jaw relaxed and lips closed. Whenever you notice that your teeth are touching, say Mississippi. Now if you grind your teeth at night, and you're unaware of it, you may need a night guard to keep you from grinding. But, honestly, if it's only a daytime thing, your jaws and teeth will thank you if you just consciously work on keeping your teeth apart except when you're eating.
Reply:I'm in my 50's and have Been going through tmj and jaw joint problems since I was 16 years old. and I have had 5 surgeries and two sets of braces.

do not get braces for tmj. and stay away from any kind of surgery

you really should try a month splint, they are soft and cushion your bite, they are great for at night.

you need to find a dentist that specializes in TMJ/TMD or a maximal doctor that does. do not allow a dentist is grind down or what they call even out your bite. you are welcome to e mail me if you have more questions. if you are having jaw joint pain you might try advil, and put heat on pain instead of ice. stay away from any caffeine
Reply:I seemed to have found something that helped out my TMJ. Now I can not say for sure if I have tmj since I have never been looked at but going off of what I know with the cracking and pooping sounds I thought that I had it. Now I recently purchased a vitamin for joints since I have had knee problems as well and I noticed after about 2 weeks I noticed that the popping and cracking has stopped. I can even open my mouth fully with out any issues. Maybe it is a coincidence but hey if it worked for me it may work for you. The supplement i purchased was flex-a-min but they-may be others out there. I hope this helped
