Do orthodontic retainers have to be tightened?

I have had my braces off for approximately 4 years after having them for about 2 and a half hears. I wear my retainer every night (otherwise i can tell they have moved and bother me when i put them back in) My retainers are loose i think i can click them in and out with my tongue. Do I need to get them tightened? My orthodontist who is actually my dentist but does some orthodontics did my braces and never mentioned me coming to have them tightened after having the braces off. Do i need to have them tightened? Just curious? I go for regular checkups and i tell them i wear them and he said they havent moved much but has never mentioned having them tightened should i mention it? thanks!

REtainers are simply there to retai nthe shape of your teeth. They are not there to move your teeth, like braces do, and that is why they tighten braces. Retainers don't need to be tightened, although if they find that the shape is not working too well, your orthodontist can easily bend a part of it without breaking it. It's not tightning, it's more of repositioning. It's normal if you can click them in and out with your tongue, but consult your ortho just in case, because they might want to adjust it. REadjusting retainers don't hurt.
Reply:I'm not sure if they tighten retainers, but I get mine adjusted every 6 months or so. If it feels weird, just ask him if it needs to be adjusted
Reply:I don't think so. I've had my braces off for over two years and I visit my orthodontist regularly and he has never mentioned tightening them to me, he only tells me to wear it every night.
Reply:yes you can get them tightened. usually after u wear ur retainers for a few months u go back to get them tightened. if ur teeth have shifted slightly it prolly is becuz they r loose.
