My dentist told me he may have to break my jaw to correct my bite and over-crowding?

I have moderate to severe crowding on my bottom teeth, and an overbite. This causes my lower teeth to bang against the back of my upper teeth, making them sensitive. If this continues my bottom teeth will eventually be damaged and even more crowded.

My dentist told me if I opted for braces I'd have to wear a retainer pretty much for the rest of my life to make sure the teeth didn't move back. He said even if he removed teeth to make room, chances are they'd shift back. What are the drawbacks of jaw surgery vs regular orthodontics? While the thought of having my jaw broken terrifies me, I don't know what the long-term costs would be for orthodonics if I have to keep wearing a retainer. Help please!!

Try getting a second opinion. Most Ortho consultations are free. I had braces and I'm told I have to wear my retainers my whole life if I want to keep them from shifting. Some ppl have permanent retainers. If you are unsure, always get a second opinion. It's your money and teeth after all. =)
Reply:After you get your braces off, you can get permanent retainers on your teeth.

I've never heard of anyone breaking a jaw as a cure. You should run away from that dentist.
Reply:I would see another dentist or ortho. I had a ortho who wanted me to have jaw surgery to move my lower jaw a tiny bit so my overbite would be perfect after braces. I found another ortho after my dentist said this was a BAD idea.. Please see another dentist who will suggest something safer for you and your health.
Reply:I've never heard of such a thing, and I'm old. Some dentists are weird and I think yours is so find another one.
