Retainers...?

Okay, so my friend's orthodontics person said that she had to wear her retainers for the rest of her life if you got braces...%26amp;%26amp; her friend's orthondontics person said that too and I'm just wondering if it's true or not becuase I don't believe that it's true...

Retainers...?
its not something that has to be done it is just something smart to do to make sure your teeth dont start shifting again
Reply:I haven't heard of that, but that doesn't mean it's not true.
Reply:An Orthodontist is a licensed doctor with an extensive education.. I would say that the doc is probably right. As you grow older your gums change and your teeth can shift. Wearing nightly retainers allows the teeth to remain aligned in place. This is absolutely true.
Reply:mostly true, because after the braces come off the teeth can shift back to their previous state.
Reply:i don't think its true. usually you only start with braces %26amp; then change to retainers. after a period of time, then you will be able to stop wearing completely!
Reply:it depends on their teeth.

depending if their teeth moved fast or slow.

if i were them, i'd listen to the ortho.

many people who never wore their retainer had there teeth go back to the way they were.

so basically they wasted time %26amp; money on those pesky braces.

i would wear the retainer.
Reply:You don't have to do anything...

but orthodontists leave the retainer behind your bottom teeth in until you are 21 and after that they still recommend you keep it so your bottom teeth (which usually move the easiest) don't get crooked again.

As for the retainer on the outside of your top teeth- we only want you to wear those for a month or so and then after that just when you sleep.
Reply:Well, for the first few weeks its vital to wear your retainers day and night. After a month or so, it is ok to wear them only at night. Once a year passes of this, you can wear them off and on.

As for the "rest of your life" statement. Not really necessary.
Reply:okay well after you have braces, normally you get a permanent retainer which is glued to the inside of your teeth and you cant feel it after awhile. sometimes people dont get permanent ones and they just wear their retainers at night after you wear your retainer 24/7 the first 6 months.
Reply:It is sadly, true. You "have" to wear it in a sense that it will prevent yourr teeth from misalignment. It is obliged that a person should wear it as often as the person can but it is not compulsary.

If the person thinks or the dentist thinks that the teeth are not that prone to movement or has settled and will not budge, then he may consider lessening or eliminating the need to wear a retainer.

I am supposed to wear a retainer now untill the end of the year.. but my teeth dont move so much anymore. So i decided to bin it. The dentist is not complaining.. YET...
Reply:i have never heard of that, but i know of permanant retainers thats glued to the back of your teeth that are there untill you break it lol.
Reply:you should wear them for 2 years faithfully. after that wear them only at night for 6 months or so then you could skip a night, eventually you should only have to wear them 1 night a week. when it gets tight to put them in that means you need to wear them more often.
