Will my son need braces again to treat an impacted 12-year molar?

The dentist took x-rays showing that my 15-year old son has an impacted 12-year molar. He said that it could be straightened with orthodontics. My son had braces for 18 months starting at the age of 12 to address other issues, and now wears a retainer at night. I wonder whether the orthodontist should have addressed the impacted molar when he still had braces.

My advice is to see his general dentist, I think he will refer your son to a oral surgeon and have the impacted molar taken out. Impacted molar usually don't correct themselves and this is just about the only solution to stop any pain he is having. l would like to think his orthodonist thought everything would be coming in as it is suppose to and didn't see a problem.

you might want to check with an oral suregon yourself and get his opinion.
Reply:if it is an upper 12 year molar, they may recommend it taken out, since often the third molar may drop into that spot. However, I generally think they would prefer to forcefully erupt it (i think that's what I would do if it was my child). Without seeing radiographs and the complete history, I can't really answer the core of your question. Lower molars would generally follow the latter advice. I would see your general dentist first with the question and ask for their advice. If you want a second opinion that is always an option too. Take care.
