How can I choose the best dental speciality for me ? (FIT ME)?
I have the same problem, but I'm a student (last year). I asked one orthodontist at my school his opinion because I was thinking about ortho. He told me he started in maxillofacial, but then ended up in ortho. So he suggested I work for a few years, try different areas and see what I like. So I will probably do that.

In my opinion, maxillofacial is awesome, but you open the door for all sorts of legal problems and lawsuits because you get cases no one else wants to touch (dentist told me this). I personally like orthodontics because there is a lot of math and thinking involved, you plan your treatments like a strategy, almost like chess. I took 2 semesters of theory for orthodontics and loved it. I never gave perio or prosthodontics a thought, but at my school, if you do prosthodontics, you get implantology included, which I would love to do. Ever think about pediatrics or endodontics?

Bottom line, I'm waiting a few years and work in the field and see what I really like.
Reply:why not just be a general dentist and do whatever you enjoy. it works for me. specializing means you have to do the same procedure all day every day. what a bore!
Reply:Both are great answers and I chose Tom's route. As a licensed dentist, you are ALLOWED to do anything you are trained and competent to do. Be a general dentist and see if you develop a love for one of the specialty areas. I really enjoy surgery, crown and bridge (Who doesn't?), some TMJ patients (about 80-90% of them), and a little bit of cosmetics, but not the really hard core stuff like veneers on the "front twelve." Those are picky, picky patients with unrealistic expectations about how their sex life is going to improve if only they have a whiter smile.

One of my endo's recently told me that being a GP is really much harder than specializing, becuase we have so much more to keep up with. It sure keeps you on your toes!

I understand that you may want to decide while you are still in an academic setting, but talk to someone in the admissions for the graduate programs at your school and see what it is like if you wait 2-3 years. Speak to one of the "older" speciality students and see how they handled application and admission.
Reply:You have to go with your passion. I interview dental students for a specialty residency program, and we look for passion. You should not choose a specialty because of someone else's advice, but because you love it. Your career will be a long one so do what you love! By the way I believe that you are not who you claim to be. Can you explain what a dental intern is? I have been in dental education for over 20 years and have not heard the term. Also I question your screen name????????
