Is orthognathic surgery possible for me (post-braces)?

I am a 26-year-old female who was born with an underbite. After having orthodontics (and six teeth pulled) from age 8 through 13, my bite was corrected, but I have subsequently developed chronic jaw pain. I haven't chewed gum in 10 years, but the pain has gotten to the point where I am unable to chew a number of foods. My jaw snaps many times a day and produces daily headaches. Even talking throughout the day can produce severe jaw fatigue.

I am wondering if I am a candidate for orthognathic surgery, since my bite has been corrected (and maintained with a permanent lower retainer that is still in place)? If not, what are my options? The (daily) pain has finally become too much for me to bear.

Thanks.

A consult with oral %26amp; maxillofacial surgeon is necessary who will do various diagnostic x-rays including your tm joints. It would be only after that any need for orthognathic surgery would be known or suggested.
